RIFLE HUNTING IN SOUTH AFRICA - AN INTRODUCTION
By Marinda Stuiver - RSA
After my Warthog hunt in 2001, I was completely intrigued and hooked on this idea. To my surprise and delight, the story I wrote about my first hunt was published in BOW (Becoming and Outdoors Women). Many jokes later in the Yahoo club from the more experienced hunters about me looking like a "boy" in the photograph, I was encouraged to learn more about this whole hunting-thing.
When I was younger I always actively took part in competitive sport (Tri-athlons) but being older now also calls for other interest and a new sport. As someone that just loves being "out there", having tried it under good guidance of the PH's watchful eye, proving that with the right guidance anyone can hunt successfully, I decided that hunting fits the bill. Besides, Venison in the freezer and some Biltong all-year-round does not seem like a bad idea either.
Mukiwa Safari Company was kind enough to offer some lessons and train me up - the idea behind this, was that the more I knew about the sport the more I would enjoy it.
I do hope that you find this interesting and entertaining as there are a lot of differences between hunting in South Africa and hunting elsewhere in the world. Hunting has so many elements to it and I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of this art form. Contrary to popular belief, it is not just about shooting or killing. What I learned, is that hunting is also about knowing the animal you wish to hunt, their behavior, shot placement, habitat, feeding habits and so much more.
The same goes for tracking - it is not just about identifying and following the spoor - it is about reading the veld and paying attention to the smallest detail. And the only way to learn is do be out there and do it....
