Firearm safety and handling rifles (continue)
We had a look at different actions - .22 that reloads, vs the bolt that has to be manually reloaded. Semi-automatic rifles are not illegal to hunt with, but it is not ethical. Hunting requires that action is needed when the hunting rifle or gun is reloaded.
The calibre of the rifle is usually etched on the barrel as well as the back of the cartridge. The type of bullets that can be used for that specific rifle is also etched on the barrel. It is not illegal not to have it etched on the barrel. Custom made rifles sometimes do not have the calibre etched.
What happens when a shot is fired?
When the trigger is pulled, the cock hits the back of the cartridge. In the case of larger calibre rifles, it hits it in the centre, ignites and an explosion takes place which channels the bullet through the barrel of the rifle or gun. In the case of a rifle, the bullet gains speed as it moves though the rifling. If the wrong size bullet is placed in the rifle, that cartridge will not fit tight and when the explosion takes place, it will explode but not channel the bullet through the barrel. One can ruin the whole rifle like this.
Bullets:
In RSA we use slower bullets due to the type of game we have here. It is ethical to shoot an animal from the back in RSA but not in Europe. It is done when a wounded animal is running away.
