Yesterday I traveled from Johannesburg to Durban for business, on my way for a meeting that entailed taking a risk. (All based on a "gut feeling"). I am not sure whether it was the cold weather, the experience of flying again or the risk, that made me think of the time we went to Kariba to do some fishing.
This happened quite some time ago prior to the land claims in Zimbabwe. My boyfriend at the time's dad lived in Bulawayo. His family traditionally did a trip once a year up to lake Kariba for some Tiger fishing, and they invited us to join them.
We traveled from Pretoria to Bulawayo by car, spending our first evening in Bulawayo. The next morning at about 4:00 am, we left for lake Kariba, my boyfriend's dad towing the boat. Quite a procession and excitement filled the air as we stopped to have coffee from a thermos flask approximately two hours after we left. There is something about the taste and smell of coffee with condensed milk from a thermos...
We arrived at Mlibisi lodge Kariba, took the boat down to the water and settled down in our chalets. By then it was quite hot and after the late night and early morning, we all took a nap. Late afternoon was dedicated to negotiations with the locals for the best fishing spot - hard to describe the scene as our hosts were regulars at Mlibisi and one had to be there to treasure the moment. Gaining intelligence regarding the feeding spots of the treasured Tiger fish is however quite an exercise. From the gestures and "gifts" we brought the local fisherman, I assumed that it was standard procedure to "barter" for the information. (Swahili is the local language in Zimbabwe for those that do not know.)
Kapenta, (small dried strong smelling fish that is used as bait) was bought, the boat checked and taken for a "test cruise". Dinner followed with the call of a Fish Eagle in the distance, sun setting and a Hippo appearing on the rim of the light to graze after dark....what a pleasure. And the air smelled so good! We settled down after our long day for a good night's rest in preparation for the "BIG DAY".
